FSM Webinar: Sustainable Wet Sanitation for Equipment Protection

April 17, 2024

In this webinar hosted by Food Safety Magazine, CFS’s Cari Rasmussen and experts from Maple Leaf Foods explore the future of sustainable wet sanitation. Using a principled seven-step sequenced approach and drawing on practical insights from a pilot plant proof of concept, the team shares findings that offer valuable lessons for any facility engaged in wet cleaning today.

Steve Tsuyuki and Stace Smith highlight the impact of a radical sanitation strategy implemented at a Maple Leaf pilot plant, while Cari Rasmussen walks through the first four steps of the process to show how each stage can contribute to meaningful sustainability gains in food production facilities striving to meet environmental goals.

There is a sweet spot where sanitation, asset care, and sustainability all meet through shared goals. The only way we can be successful is if we work together—let's make sanitation a team sport!"

Re-imagining wet sanitation with sustainability in mind offers a wide range of benefits. Facilities can improve operational efficiency by reducing equipment damage and minimizing downtime. Lower hot water usage translates into reduced energy consumption and fewer greenhouse gas emissions. Simplifying chemical use—for instance, eliminating foam steps for lightly soiled surfaces—further supports a safer, more sustainable approach. Waste management also improves through the reduction of plastic use and better landfill diversion, ultimately lowering effluent surcharges.

The cross-functional paradigm is probably the most important part; it drives ownership and cooperation between the different elements in the plant."

Executing sanitation sustainably, when done right, will have a significant impact in so many ways. Success can be achieved by working together to reimagine wet sanitation processes that clean effectively and efficiently while preserving assets and improving sustainability outcomes.
